On Saturday 28th January, the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club held the annual Greyhound of the Year awards night. The fantastic event was held at Bellevue Hotel. The main event of the night of course was handing out the awards. The awards where handed out in the following categories, Owner of the Year, Trainer of the Year, Catcher of the Year, Leading Sire of the Year, Broodbitch of the Year, Lady Trainer of the Year and last but not least the Greyhound of the Year. Congratulations to Michael Campbell who continued on his fifth straight year on winning Trainer of the Year. The Lady Trainer of the Year award this year was taken by Joan Newham. The next award to be given out was the Owner of the Year. Congratulations to Robert Lound who was the winner of the award. As an owner, Robert finished off 2011 with 81 Winners, 84 Seconds and 65 Thirds which gives it a total of 884 points.
The next award was the Catcher of the Year. Once again the man who won this award is a person who has been involved in the sport for as long as anyone can remember, he is always there on a Tuesday night for the races looking to catch winners and this man is Bernie Fraser. The Leading Sire of the Year award for 2011 was taken out by one of Australia's champions, Hallucinate. The greyhound sired in Townsville alone last year, 76 Winners, 77.5 Seconds and 56 Thirds which was again gives a total of 820.5 points. Other sires such as Black Enforcer finished second on 393 points and Where's Pedro in third on 368 points. The Broodbitch of the Year award was taken out for 2011 by the Glen Olsen owned and trained bitch Complete Chaos. The Olsen trained bitch was one of the best sprinters that graced the track around the same time as Glen's other greyhound Saltwater Pete.
Complete Chaos finished off 2011 with 62 Winners, 58 Seconds and 47 Thirds with a total of 655 points. Other broodbitches such as Tranquil Touch finished second on 228 points with Camara Belle finished third on 214 points. The last award of the night was the Greyhound of the Year for 2011. To best describe the award, it is a symbol of a greyhound, male or female who has shown the true ability and also to be crowned in other words the king or queen of the Townsville track and that greyhound was Colli Belle. The winner is by the sire Collision out of local well known bitch Camara Belle. Trained by Wulguru trainer Steve Dodd the bitch finished off 2011 with 18 Wins, 8 Seconds and 5 Thirds with a total of 153 points. The two Glen Olsen trained greyhounds Herman John finished second on 146 points and Saltwater Chaos finishing third 103 points. Steve now goes down to Brisbane in February to collect another award on behalf of Racing Queensland at the Brisbane Greyhound Awards Night. The last award was the Life Membership and it went to Des McPhee. Lot of people don't know how much work Des does behind the scenes and for that the club and the greyhound community of Townsville are very thankful for.

On very rare occasions do we see well known small local trainers in the winner's circle, but on Tuesday night the Joanne Wooler kennel had found themselves an honest winner with the greyhound Bearly Flying, handled by her husband Andrew Wooler the greyhound down rivals, Augustus and Charlie Booker in the time of 22.55. Another trainer who is making a good come back is Phillip Rudall along with his greyhound Bentley Bernie who has been making quite a good name for himself going through the grades each week and will start next week in third grade level. As some people may or may not know that all of Phil's greyhounds have the first half of the name Bentley on which is where the trainer lives with his team of greyhounds.
In celebration of Australia Day on Thursday 26th, the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club conducted on Tuesday a one of event which is named the Australia Day Trophy which is decided as a best eight event held over the 498m. This was how the box draw panned out for the final.
Far North Wholesalers Australia Day Trophy Best 8 Final Box Draw - 498m
As you see the draw is fielded with a small stellar group of greyhounds. On form guide statics Saltwater Chaos trained by Glen Olsen looked a promising chance after running second last Tuesday behind Sammy Booker over the 380m but the Olsen trained greyhound has always been constant through out his career here in Townsville. The most likely favourite with punters, Are They Now trained by Noel Vohland looked also to be a chance from box one. Both See Blue and Don't Listen where up there with a chance as well but both greyhounds drew poorly due to be more suited to an inside draw.
As the greyhounds were being placed away into the boxes, the favourite with punters was Are They Now at $3.30 and Don't Listen at $3.50. With somewhat slow start to the race, Are They Now jumped perfectly with Super Soprano almost cleaning up the inside of the field which left See Blue plenty of room to play. See Blue then dashed to the lead in the back straight and basically doing what she always does best to leave her rivals in her tracks all the way to the finish.
See Blue is owned and trained by the man known as the Bart Cummings of greyhound racing here in Townsville, Neville Waters beating for 2nd Saltwater Chaos trained by Glen Olsen and 3rd Are They Now trained by Noel Vohland in the time of 29.57. This is the second time that See Blue has won this feature event which the bitch won it last year winning in the time of 29.73. Another greyhound that has also done the impossible was the Michael Hickmott trained Star Dancer which won the event in 2006 and 2007 also winning them both in very smart times.
A reminder to Owners and Trainers, due to Australia Day being a public holiday on Thursday, Racing Queensland has advised trainers to please nominate for Townsville's next meeting 31st January on Wednesday 25th January.
Nominations still close at 8.00am through Racing Queensland along with the fields being released at 12.00pm on Wednesday. Please note nominations have been held over until Friday 27 January before 8.00am.
A quick reminder to everyone, that this Saturday 28th January, is the Greyhound of the Year Awards Night. The event will be at Bellevue Hotel and it will commence around 7.00pm. The club will look forward to see you there on the night.

For young greyhound trainers starting out in the sport it is always hard to start off with a winner but on Tuesday night Wulguru trainer Matthew McGuire received his first winner which was Bow Wow Yeah making his fifth grade debut to Townsville downing rivals Giaconda and Bromance in the time of 22.24.
On Tuesday night owners, punters and trainers witnessed the final of the Racing Queensland Limited Young Guns Final which was held over the 380m. Recapping from last Tuesday's heats of the Young Guns, heat one was taken out by Archangel trained by Gary Heath had won in the time of 22.83. Heat two was won by a bitch with a class all of her own, Are They Now trained by Noel Vohland in the time of 22.41.
Heat three showed some fantastic talent taken out by Georgee Go Wing trained by Robert Olsen in the time of 22.06. Heat four was the last heat of the series which was taken out by Major Lightman trained by Norm Randall in the time of 22.43. In the form guide selections Are They Now looked to be a promising chance from box two alongside Georgee Go Wing from box one. As the runners were placed into the boxes for the final, the favourite was Are They Now at $2.90 along with Georgee Go Wing at $3.00. But once again veteran Alligator trainer Robert Olsen has put the polish on this great greyhound who downed his rivals, Top Knock and Are They Now in the time of 21.94. As readers of this website may or may not know that Georgee Go Wing is named after a Chinese fruiterer at Charters Towers when Robert was a young boy.
Georgee Go Wing will now head south to join the Glen and Pat Carrington Kennels within the next few weeks in preparation for the Ipswich Auction Series. The greyhound was bought as an Ipswich Auction Series dog and Robert is keen to get him down there and get him ready for the series.
The committee of the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club wish to extend their heartfelt sympathy to Norma and Rhonda and their families on the sad passing of former member and committee member Mr "Dougie" Lee. He will be sadly missed around the showgrounds.
Very rarely here at Townsville come across track record breakers but on Tuesday night the Glen Olsen trained Saltwater Legend made his chance possible downing rivals in the process, It's All Perfect and Gable Roulette winning in the time of 21.84. The track record still stands at 21.81 held by Gozo Farmer back in 2005. Glen also had another winner during the night which was Fantasy Bound making maiden winning debut in the time of 22.14.
It was great to see last Tuesday some visiting trainers from down south Warren Scannella and many more but unfortunately lady luck was just not on their side when they needed it the most. It was also great to see the greyhound Two Up Tuffy make a visit to the showgrounds which is also owned by website creators of Dinky Di Web Design, Rick and Di O'Donnell and who also keeping our website running everyday and making it look fantastic. A huge thank you goes out to Rick & Di on behalf of the club because without them our website would not be made possible without their creative talents since the website first opened back in 2010.
