TOWNSVILLE GREYHOUND NEWS
18 January 2012
For young greyhound trainers starting out in the sport it is always hard to start off with a winner but on Tuesday night Wulguru trainer Matthew McGuire received his first winner which was Bow Wow Yeah making his fifth grade debut to Townsville downing rivals Giaconda and Bromance in the time of 22.24.

On Tuesday night owners, punters and trainers witnessed the final of the Racing Queensland Limited Young Guns Final which was held over the 380m. Recapping from last Tuesday's heats of the Young Guns, heat one was taken out by Archangel trained by Gary Heath had won in the time of 22.83. Heat two was won by a bitch with a class all of her own, Are They Now trained by Noel Vohland in the time of 22.41.

Heat three showed some fantastic talent taken out by Georgee Go Wing trained by Robert Olsen in the time of 22.06. Heat four was the last heat of the series which was taken out by Major Lightman trained by Norm Randall in the time of 22.43. In the form guide selections Are They Now looked to be a promising chance from box two alongside Georgee Go Wing from box one. As the runners were placed into the boxes for the final, the favourite was Are They Now at $2.90 along with Georgee Go Wing at $3.00. But once again veteran Alligator trainer Robert Olsen has put the polish on this great greyhound who downed his rivals, Top Knock and Are They Now in the time of 21.94. As readers of this website may or may not know that Georgee Go Wing is named after a Chinese fruiterer at Charters Towers when Robert was a young boy.

Georgee Go Wing will now head south to join the Glen and Pat Carrington Kennels within the next few weeks in preparation for the Ipswich Auction Series. The greyhound was bought as an Ipswich Auction Series dog and Robert is keen to get him down there and get him ready for the series.

The committee of the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club wish to extend their heartfelt sympathy to Norma and Rhonda and their families on the sad passing of former member and committee member Mr "Dougie" Lee. He will be sadly missed around the showgrounds.

Very rarely here at Townsville come across track record breakers but on Tuesday night the Glen Olsen trained Saltwater Legend made his chance possible downing rivals in the process, It's All Perfect and Gable Roulette winning in the time of 21.84. The track record still stands at 21.81 held by Gozo Farmer back in 2005. Glen also had another winner during the night which was Fantasy Bound making maiden winning debut in the time of 22.14.

It was great to see last Tuesday some visiting trainers from down south Warren Scannella and many more but unfortunately lady luck was just not on their side when they needed it the most. It was also great to see the greyhound Two Up Tuffy make a visit to the showgrounds which is also owned by website creators of Dinky Di Web Design, Rick and Di O'Donnell and who also keeping our website running everyday and making it look fantastic. A huge thank you goes out to Rick & Di on behalf of the club because without them our website would not be made possible without their creative talents since the website first opened back in 2010.

As the racing season comes to a close for another year here at Townsville, the last night of racing at the showgrounds was an event not be missed with a special appearance by the one and only man in the red suit himself, Santa Claus!  who was at trackside to say hello to all his friends at the showgrounds.

The last event on the racing calendar in Townsville was the Townsville City Council Mayors Trophy. This prestigious event was held last Tuesday night with it being a one off event. The best eight  selected greyhounds in Townsville and in Queensland. This was how the box draw panned out for the event.

Ima Hornet - Raymond Burman
Outback Thunder - Noel Vohland
VACANT
Herman John - Glen Olsen
Fuelled Fantasy - Stephen Clark
Don't Listen - Bradley Belford
Red Colorado - Rhonda Goodwin
Are They Now - Noel Vohland

On form guide selections, from box one Ima Hornet trained by Raymond Burman looked a promising chance as a first starter here at the showgrounds along with last start winner Are They Now who is looking  for win number ten after recently finishing fifth in the latest Cairns Young Guns. As the runners where loaded into the boxes the betting prices at the present time, punters saw the favourite Are They Now at $2.80 and Herman John at $4.50.

With the field jumping neatly Ima Hornet held the lead right up into the back straight but the mad railer from box four Don't Listen, found herself a gap to the front and was no chance of stopping to the finish trained by Brad Belford over 2nd Fuelled Fantasy and 3rd Herman John in the time of 29.24. During the night of the night Brad also had five winners including Don't Listen, Mortus Maximus, Minor Work, Stealthy Express and Cypress Point.

The Townsville showgrounds also had another special guest, Townsville City Council's Tony Parsons who was also on trackside to be at the presentation to present the trophy to the winner and the connections.

Gumlow trainer Brad Belford gave punters on Tuesday something to talk about when the Belford trained greyhound Mortus Maximus brilliantly won over the 380m in the flying time of 21.97, downing rivals Bar Time and Second Glance.

The ongoing battle between Townsville's own Herman John trained by Glen Olsen and the Steve Dodd trained Colli Belle is now getting down close to the wire. The way the box draw panned out for the best eight over the 380m, was a somewhat difficult challenge for both greyhounds.  The Steve Dodd trained bitch draw box four, with the Glen Olsen Trained Herman John draw box seven in-between danger rivals Bold Apache and Mr. Solution.

At the start Colli Belle gained a good lead on the field and never gave up without a fight with a brilliant top grade win with the bitch scoring by seven lengths to 2nd Outta State and with a length and a half the Hidden Quest in the time of 22.11. Colli Belle's closest rival Herman John finished a disappointing seventh. Next Tuesday will decide on the last race meeting of the year that who will be named the Townsville Greyhound of the Year for 2011, Now with Colli Belle in front there is still a chance for Herman John to take on the title, you decide!

Next Tuesday will be our final racing meeting for the year and to finish it off the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club and The Townsville Council have organized a few activities for it to be a great family event for all. The activities that will be on offer such as a Jumping Castle, Face Painting and of course it wouldn't a special event so close to Christmas without a special visit from the man in the red suit, Santa Claus. Admission will be free through the gates with the first race set to jump at 6.55pm. The main feature race event of the night will be the Townsville City Council Mayors Trophy held over the 498m.

As reports come in from the north up in Cairns the running of the RQL Century Cranes Young Guns Final was held last Saturday Night held over the 410m. The only representative for Townsville is the latest sprint queen of North Qld, Are They Now trained by Noel Vohland. The Vohland trained bitch won an impressive heat in her debut to the Cannon Park track winning in the time of 23.89, downing her rivals Tokalon Thunder and Tiwi Terra.  The results where a complete upset with the reserve Soweto Warrior trained by Christy Godfrey jumping from box three taking home the victory downing 2nd Tokalon Thunder and 3rd Archangel in the time of 24.12. The main Townsville representative Are They Now finished in fifth.

One of the new up and coming trainers in Townsville, Vincent Murphy got his first winner last Tuesday with the Greyhound Chapman who has just begun his career so Vincent will hopefully get a thrill ride with this greyhound which won in the time of 22.29 last Tuesday, downing rivals Sufin' High and Grumpy Poet.

Last Tuesday saw the running of the final of the 35th T.G.R.C Anniversary Trophy. The Anniversary Trophy is in honour of the time the club has been at the showgrounds which is thirty - five years, which is a milestone for any club. Due to a shortage of nominations this feature race was to become a one off event for the evening program. This is how the box draw panned out for the final.

35th T.G.R.C Anniversary Trophy Final Box Draw - 498m
 Top Knock - Joan Newham
 See Blue - Neville Waters
 Toxic Chick - Glen Olsen
 Mortus Maximus - Bradley Belford
 Herman John - Glen Olsen
 Black Feather - Joan Newham
 Don't Listen - Bradley Belford
 Super Soprano - Mate Rajan

On form it would make it difficult for punters to make a winning decision but all eyes were set firmly on the Neville Waters trained See Blue. The second favourite for punters was the current greyhound of the year at time Herman John along with Don't Listen and the outsider troublemaker from box eight, Super Soprano. As the runners were placed into the boxes, the betting prices at the time were See Blue at $2.30 and Herman John at $2.90.

Once again the outsider Super Soprano naturally cleaned up half of the field which with a result for See Blue which gave her a dash for the front through the to back straight and was just unbeatable, but it was a continuing success with See Blue making another outstanding victory over the 498m, trained by Neville Waters 2nd Don't Listen and 3rd Herman John in the time of 29.39.

See Blue has had one fantastic racing career with been a finalist in both the Cairns and Townsville Cups, Taking out both the Australia Day Trophy and the North Queensland Cup and along with winning the Anniversary Trophy. The Neville Waters trained bitch will continue on racing with a possible breeding career in the near future.

Last Friday night the Cairns Greyhound Racing Club ran three heats of the RQL Century Cranes Young Guns Series which was held over the 410m. There was no doubt that Townsville was well support in the heats with the likes of Are They Now from box seven and many other greyhounds from Townsville as well to take on this feature event. But once again even that it wasn't her home track, Are They Now just proves to be unbeatable trained by Noel Vohland winning by four and three quarter lengths over 2nd Tokalon Thunder with a length and three quarters to Tiwi Terra in 3rd in the time of 23.89, which is an impressive run for a first look at the Cairns track. Other heat winners were the Stephen Clark trained Thunder Spirit in the time of 24.03 and the Isobel Camp trained Mel Don't Care in the time of 24.07. The result of the final will be released in next week's article.

Attention all Owners and Trainers. The Townsville Club and I are looking into putting together as much information as possible about the history of the club but also the history of the Townsville Cup and winners of the Cup. Unfortunately it is very hard to track down this sort of information, due to the fact that most of the information has been lost, and that is why we need your help.  If you have any stories or memories and articles from previous Townsville Cups that you would like to share please write it down on a piece of paper and leave in the office for me to collect or email the club. Below is a list of Townsville Cup winners that we have so far. As you see there is still spots empty and the more help we can get the easier it will be to complete.  We look forward to your memories and input into this very important history of our club.

The title for the 2011 Townsville Greyhound of the Year is a battle like none other. The two dog race is between the Glen Olsen owned, trained and bred Herman John and the Steve Dodd owned and trained bitch Colli Belle. Herman John made his way back to the showgrounds in the previous week making an easy victory of the local bitch and last Tuesday Colli Belle did exactly the same in return running in the time of 22.11. As there is only three weeks left before racing at the showgrounds is wrapped up for the year, these two greyhounds will be the ones to watch as the battle just gets bigger and bigger.

Last Tuesday night saw the running of the Racing Queensland Limited Maiden 1000 Series Final, race five on the program was to be the decider of the final. The well tipped greyhound throughout the series Stealthy Express was the fastest heat winner last Tuesday in the time of 22.39. The outside danger from box eight was the third heat winner Iced Ink trained by Nathan Goodwin in the time of 22.54. As they were loaded into the boxes, the betting price at the present time was the Bradley Belford trained Stealthy Express at $2.10 and the Nathan Goodwin trained Iced Ink at $2.50. Once again it was an outsider upset victory with the Wayne Scott trained Farmor Goals, making  the trip all the way from Sarina worth it by scoring  two lengths over Stealthy Express 2nd and with two lengths to Meah Lorian in 3rd in the time of 22.71.
